About the Gubbi Gubbi People

The Gubbi Gubbi people Gubbi Gubbi people (also historically written as Kabi Kabi) are the Traditional Custodians of Country stretching across South-East Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, parts of the Maryborough and Gympie regions and parts of the Moreton Bay region. Their sea and land Country includes coastal areas, rivers, hinterland ranges and significant cultural sites. Gubbi Gubbi have a long history as hosts of gatherings such as the Bunya (Bonyi) nut festivals and continue to maintain language, cultural practices, dance troupes and educational programs that share their knowledge of Country with visitors and local communities.

In 2024, a Federal Court determination recognised non-exclusive native title rights for Kabi Kabi people over a large area of land and waters across the Sunshine Coast, affirming ongoing connection and custodianship.
