About the Whadjuk People

The Whadjuk people The Whadjuk people are the Traditional Owners of the land and waters around what is now Perth, Western Australia. They are one of fourteen groups within the Noongar nation, the Aboriginal people of the south-west corner of Western Australia. Whadjuk country extends across the Swan Coastal Plain, from the Darling Scarp to the Indian Ocean, and includes the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan) and its tributaries. The Swan River and its wetlands were central to Whadjuk life, providing fish, freshwater turtles, waterbirds, and plant foods throughout the seasons. Kings Park (Mooro Katta) and the surrounding bushland were significant camping and ceremonial grounds. The six seasons recognised by Noongar people guided the movement of Whadjuk families across their country, following the availability of food and freshwater. Today, Whadjuk Noongar people maintain a strong cultural presence in Perth through language programs, cultural education, Welcome to Country ceremonies, and active participation in heritage protection. The South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council and the Whadjuk Working Party continue to advocate for Noongar rights and the recognition of their enduring connection to country.
