The Larrakia people The Larrakia people, who call themselves Gulumirrgin (meaning "our land"), are the Traditional Owners of the greater Darwin region in the Northern Territory. Known as the "Saltwater People," their identity and culture are deeply intertwined with the sea, the harbour, and the tropical coastline of Australia's Top End. Their traditional country extends from Cox Peninsula across Darwin Harbour to Gunn Point. Larrakia society was based on maritime relationships and trade networks with neighbouring groups including the Tiwi, Wadjiginy, and Djerimanga peoples. Significant sacred sites dot the Darwin landscape, including Stokes Hill, Mindil Beach, Rapid Creek, and Casuarina Beach, where the Old Man rock (Nugalinya) is a powerful ancestral spirit site that binds all Larrakia people together. The meaning of "Garramilla," the Larrakia name for Darwin, is "white stone," referring to the colour of rock and sea cliffs in the area. Today, the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation represents the interests of Larrakia people and manages cultural heritage, community programs, and services across the Darwin region. The Larrakia Cultural Centre, being built at the Darwin Waterfront adjacent to the sacred Stokes Hill site, will house returned sacred artefacts and serve as a major cultural institution for the Top End.
