Meanjin is the Turrbal name for the spike-shaped land where Brisbane's city centre now stands. The area around the Brisbane River (Maiwar) has been a significant meeting place for Aboriginal peoples for over 65,000 years.

The Turrbal people Turrbal people are the Traditional Owners of much of the area now known as Brisbane (Meanjin), with strong cultural, spiritual and economic connections to the Brisbane River and surrounding lands. Their country includes parts of the northern and central Brisbane region, extending along the river and bay, and they maintain deep responsibilities for caring for Country, continuing language and cultural practices, and maintaining stories and songlines associated with Meanjin and the wider river system.

The Yuggera people Yuggera (also written Jagera, Yagara, Ugarapul or Yugarabul) people are Traditional Owners whose Country covers large parts of the greater Brisbane region, south and south-west of the Brisbane River through Ipswich, Logan and the Brisbane Valley. Yuggera speakers maintained close cultural connections with neighbouring groups and together are recognised as custodians of the land and waters around Ipswich and western Brisbane. Yuggera people continue language revitalisation, lead Welcome to Country and ceremonies, and are active in community organisations and land-care and heritage projects across this region.
